Neuropathy Evaluation & Testing

Every recommendation at The Roots starts with measurement. Our neuropathy evaluation combines a one-on-one consultation, circulation assessment, a 16-point sensory exam, balance testing, and any necessary X-rays — so you know exactly how your nerves are functioning and what your real options are.

What the neuropathy evaluation includes

The evaluation is a structured, objective baseline of your nerve health — not a quick look and a sales pitch. Here's what happens at the visit:

  • One-on-one consultation — your history, your symptoms, your goals, and every question you bring
  • Circulation assessment — because blood flow is the supply line your nerves depend on
  • 16-point sensory exam — mapping precisely where sensation is reduced, altered, or absent
  • Balance test — measuring how your nerves and brain are coordinating, a key fall-risk indicator
  • Any necessary X-rays — when structure may be contributing to nerve compression
  • Doctor's recommendations — a plain-English explanation of what we found and what we'd do about it

You leave with answers either way. If what we find suggests you need a different kind of provider, we say so and point you in the right direction.

If your tests came back “normal” but your symptoms are real

One of the most common stories we hear: burning, tingling, or numbness that's very real — but an EMG or nerve-conduction study that came back normal, and a feeling of not being taken seriously afterward.

There's often a physiological explanation. Standard nerve-conduction studies primarily assess large, fast-conducting nerve fibers. The small fibers that carry pain and temperature signals — the ones most involved in burning and tingling — aren't well captured by those tests, which is why small fiber neuropathy can go undetected on a normal EMG.

Our sensory and circulation testing looks at function from a different angle. It doesn't replace neurological workups — it complements them, and it frequently gives patients the first objective picture of what they've been feeling all along.

How progress gets measured after the evaluation

The baseline evaluation isn't a one-time event. If you begin care with us, the same objective measurements are repeated at progress re-exams, so improvement shows up as numbers you can see — sensation returning on the 16-point map, circulation readings changing, balance scores climbing — not just impressions.

That's also how we hold ourselves accountable. If the numbers aren't moving, we adjust the plan or have an honest conversation about it.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

The complete new-patient evaluation is $49, which includes the consultation, circulation assessment, 16-point sensory exam, balance test, any necessary X-rays, and the doctor's recommendations.
An EMG and nerve-conduction study primarily assess large nerve fibers and are excellent for what they measure. Our evaluation focuses on functional measures — precise sensory mapping, circulation, and balance — which capture aspects of nerve health those tests aren't designed to, including patterns consistent with small fiber involvement. The two are complementary; bring your prior results with you.
No referral is needed. If you're already seeing a neurologist, podiatrist, or primary doctor, we're glad to coordinate and share what we find.
Plan for about an hour. The doctor reviews your results with you the same visit — you won't wait weeks to find out what was found.
Any prior test results (EMG, nerve-conduction, labs, imaging), a list of your current medications, and your questions. The more complete the picture, the better the recommendations.
