Red Light Therapy for Neuropathy

Red light therapy (photobiomodulation) uses specific wavelengths of light to support circulation and cellular energy production — two things struggling nerves depend on. At The Roots, it's one of the core pieces of our drug-free neuropathy program in Lakewood Ranch, delivered in painless 15-minute sessions.

How red light therapy relates to nerve health

Peripheral nerves are metabolically demanding — they need steady blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients along their entire length, from your spine to your toes. When circulation suffers, the longest nerves suffer first, which is one reason neuropathy so often starts in the feet.

Red and near-infrared light at specific wavelengths has been studied for its effects on local circulation and on the mitochondria — the energy factories inside cells. That's why photobiomodulation shows up in peer-reviewed research on nerve function and why we made it a standard component of our care plans rather than an add-on.

We use it as one input among several: light supports the environment nerves live in, while the rest of your plan works on the other factors your evaluation identifies — compression, inflammation, and stimulation.

What a session at The Roots looks like

Sessions are simple and genuinely relaxing. You're seated comfortably, the light panels are positioned over the areas being addressed, and the session itself runs about 15 minutes — plan for around 45 minutes in the clinic for the full visit. There are no needles, no downtime, and nothing to recover from afterward.

  • Painless — most patients describe gentle warmth
  • 15-minute sessions (about 45 minutes in-clinic total)
  • No downtime — drive yourself home, resume your day
  • Typically combined with other program components in the same visit

Who red light therapy can help — and who it can't

Red light therapy supports nerves that still have the capacity to function better — which is exactly what our evaluation measures. If your sensory exam and circulation assessment show meaningful remaining function, light therapy is usually part of the recommended plan. If testing suggests your situation needs a different kind of provider, we'll tell you that plainly instead of selling you sessions.

That honesty matters here more than anywhere: no light panel reverses every case of nerve damage, and any clinic promising that should worry you. What we can do is measure where you are, support the factors within reach, and track your progress in real numbers.

Beyond Neuropathy

Red light therapy is also a full program at The Roots Health Centers.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Photobiomodulation has published research supporting its effects on circulation and cellular energy production, both of which matter for nerve function. Individual results depend on how much nerve function remains and what's driving your neuropathy — which is why we test first and recommend second. We track progress with objective re-exams so you see real numbers, not impressions.
No. Sessions are painless — most people feel gentle warmth and find the sessions relaxing. There are no needles and no downtime.
The light session itself is about 15 minutes. Plan for roughly 45 minutes in the clinic for the full visit, since sessions are usually combined with other parts of your care plan.
Red light therapy is non-invasive and doesn't interact with blood-sugar management the way a medication would. At your evaluation we review your full health picture, including diabetes, and design the plan around it. Keep your prescribing physician in the loop about all care you receive — we're glad to coordinate.
Home devices vary enormously in wavelength, power, and coverage, and using one without a plan means guessing. Clinical sessions use professional-grade equipment as one measured piece of a broader program — and your progress is tracked against baseline testing, so you know whether it's helping.
